We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Kimberly Gordon-Achebe, a child and adolescent community psychiatrist practicing in Baltimore, has been honored with the Jeanne Spurlock, M.D., Minority Fellowship Program Achievement Award 2022 at the APA’s Annual Meeting in New Orleans! This prestigious award recognizes the outstanding achievements of former fellows of the Minority Fellowships who have made significant contributions to psychiatry and the minority community.
Dr. Gordon-Achebe is not only an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine but also the former program director of the Child and Adolescent Fellowship Program. She is a past president of APA’s Caucus of Black Psychiatrists 2016-2019.
As a child and adolescent psychiatrist, Dr. Gordon-Achebe focuses her career on minoritized populations, particularly children and adolescents with mental illness. She considers herself both an equity psychiatrist and an anti-racist psychiatrist, with a focus on addressing societal barriers with structural competency and teaching cultural humility. Her dedication to advancing equity in health care for minorities and underserved populations is truly inspiring.
In addition to her work as a psychiatrist, Dr. Gordon-Achebe is also the founder and principal consultant, and mindset coach of Bringing Health Equity Training to Communities (BHETC). At BHETC, she provides training on health disparities, social determinants of health, microaggressions, and prejudice in medicine. She educates communities about mental health and trauma at various church, community, and school venues, and also coach women of color who are interested in advancing health equity in their communities.
Receiving the Jeanne Spurlock, M.D., Minority Fellowship Program Achievement Award is a tremendous honor for Dr. Gordon-Achebe.
